Registration and GBAO Permits
Two Tajikistan-specific rules to plan for: registering a longer stay and the GBAO permit for the Pamirs.
Important
Two requirements distinguish travel in Tajikistan. First, foreign nationals staying beyond a short period are generally expected to register their stay with the authorities; failing to register can cause problems on departure. Second, the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), including the Pamir Highway, is a restricted zone that needs a separate GBAO permit on top of a visa.
The GBAO permit can usually be requested as an add-on during the online e-visa application, making it straightforward to arrange for travellers heading to the Pamirs. Confirm both the registration threshold and the GBAO permit process before you travel, as details change.
Plan for
- Registering your stay if it exceeds the short-visit threshold
- Adding a GBAO permit for any travel in the Pamir / Gorno-Badakhshan region
- Carrying your visa, permit and registration proof while travelling
