Processing times for a Switzerland national visa (type D)
National visa files are decided by the canton, so timelines run to one or several months; cases with prior cantonal or SEM authorisation are issued much faster.
Important
Because a national (type D) visa requires a residence permit, the Swiss representation abroad forwards your application to the cantonal migration office for examination, and the representation can only issue the visa once the competent authorities have approved it. The SEM states that the time the responsible authorities need varies by canton and purpose of stay, and that, as a rule, one to several months must be expected.
Where you already hold an authorisation from a cantonal authority or from the SEM, the representation only needs to produce the visa itself, which is considerably quicker. The representation does not give status updates during the procedure, so questions about progress go to the cantonal migration authority.
