Who it's for
Non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals with enough passive income or savings to live in Spain without working - typically retirees, the financially independent, or those taking a career break.
Requirements
- Proof of regular passive income or sufficient savings meeting the 400%-of-IPREM threshold (plus 100% of IPREM per dependant)
- Private health insurance from an insurer authorised in Spain, covering all medical costs with no deductibles, co-pays or waiting periods
- Clean criminal record certificate (apostilled/legalised) for the last 5 years
- Medical certificate issued within the last 90 days confirming no public-health-risk diseases
- Commitment not to carry out any lucrative/work activity
- Valid passport (at least 1 year validity)

How to apply
Apply in person at the Spanish consulate covering your place of residence, submitting the EX-01 form, financial evidence, insurance and background documents. The consulate assesses whether your means are genuine and sufficient.
Once the visa is issued you have 90 days to enter Spain, after which you must register and obtain the foreigner identity card (TIE) within one month.

Frequently asked questions
No. The Spanish authorities state clearly that this visa is not a work permit and does not allow teleworking. If you want to work remotely, apply for the digital nomad visa instead.
