Who it's for

Non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals who earn their living remotely - as employees of a non-Portuguese company or as freelancers serving clients abroad - and want to live in Portugal while continuing that work.

Requirements

  • Proof of remote employment contract or freelance/service contracts with clients outside Portugal
  • Average monthly income meeting the required multiple of the Portuguese minimum wage
  • Bank statements / savings evidence
  • Proof of accommodation in Portugal
  • Portuguese tax number (NIF)
  • Health insurance, valid passport and clean criminal record certificate

  • Live in Portugal while working remotely for foreign employers/clients
  • Choose a temporary-stay version (up to a year) or a residence version that leads to a permit via AIMA
  • Renew and, on the residence track, build time toward permanent residence
  • Bring family via reunification on the residence route

How to apply

Gather proof of your remote income over recent months and your contracts, plus Portuguese accommodation and NIF. Apply for the D8 (temporary-stay or residence) at the consulate or VFS centre for your area.

For the residence version, enter Portugal on the visa and complete the AIMA residence-permit step within the visa's validity.
