Documents for a Portugal visa application
The documents typically required for a Portugal national long-stay (Type D) visa, whether for temporary stay or residency.
Important
A Portugal national long-stay visa (Type D) is applied for at a Portuguese consular post and covers stays of more than three months, either as a temporary stay visa (under a year) or a residency visa leading to a residence permit. Every application shares a core set of documents, on top of which each purpose (work, study, family reunification, retirement, passive income and so on) adds its own supporting evidence.
As Portugal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs sets out, the consular post can always request further documents beyond the mandatory initial list, so applicants should treat the core list as a minimum rather than a complete file.
Core documents for every application
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists the following as generally required for a national residency visa:
- National Visa application form, filled in and signed by the applicant
- Two identical, recent, passport-type photographs in good condition
- Passport or other travel document valid for at least three months beyond the intended date of return
- Valid travel insurance covering necessary medical expenses
- Criminal record certificate, with Hague Apostille or legalisation
- Proof of financial resources (means of subsistence), as defined by law
- Proof of regular/legal status in the country of application, where applicable
Extra documents for minors
- Travel authorisation from the parent(s) or a court order, where applicable
- A copy of the identity document of the parent(s)
Purpose-specific evidence
Requirements vary significantly with the reason for the stay. Depending on the route, applicants add evidence such as an employment contract or promise of one, a service-provision contract, proof of enrolment or a research/hosting agreement, business or investment documentation, proof of family relationship for reunification, or proof of pension/passive income for retirement and income-based routes.
