Who it's for

Non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals accepted onto a study programme, a research project at an approved institution, an internship, an exchange, or a volunteering programme in Portugal lasting more than a year.

Requirements

  • Proof of enrolment/acceptance at a recognised institution, or a hosting/research agreement
  • Proof of means of subsistence for the stay
  • Proof of accommodation in Portugal
  • Health insurance
  • Clean criminal record certificate and valid passport
  • Evidence of any scholarship or funding where relevant

What you can do

  • Study or carry out research in Portugal
  • Obtain and renew a residence permit for the duration of the programme
  • Work part-time within the limits allowed for students
  • Transition to other permits (e.g. work) after graduating, subject to the rules

How to apply

Obtain your acceptance letter or hosting/research agreement, then apply for the D4 residence visa at the consulate or VFS centre serving your area.

Enter Portugal on the visa and complete the AIMA residence-permit process.
