Documents for a France visa application
The supporting documents needed for a French national long-stay visa depend on your purpose of stay, on top of a common core set.
Important
For any stay in France longer than 90 days you apply for a long-stay visa (visa de long sejour), and the documents you must supply depend on the purpose of your stay: work, study, family or visitor. France-Visas does not publish a single universal checklist; instead its online tool builds a personalised list once you enter your nationality, situation and purpose.
Alongside the purpose-specific evidence, every applicant provides a common core: a completed long-stay application form, a valid passport, photos meeting the ICAO standard, and proof of the fee. The consulate or its authorised centre keeps copies of your documents and your passport during processing.
Common core documents
These are typically required regardless of your route:
- The completed long-stay visa application form (Cerfa long-stay form)
- A passport valid for the intended stay, with blank pages
- Recent passport photographs meeting the required standard
- Proof of accommodation for the duration of the stay
- Proof of sufficient financial means to support yourself
- Proof of payment of the visa fee
Purpose-specific evidence
On top of the core, each route adds its own documents, for example:
- Study: proof of enrolment/admission and evidence of resources (from applications submitted on or after 1 August 2026, proof of income corresponding to a minimum of about EUR 877.50 per month)
- Work / Passeport Talent: a work authorisation, employment contract or the relevant talent qualifying document
- Family: documents proving the family relationship and the status of the person you are joining
- Visitor: an undertaking not to work in France plus proof of sufficient resources and health insurance
