German Research Visa

Who it's for

• Researchers with a project at a recognised German research institution or university
• Academics and scientists, including those doing research within a company's research department
• Researchers wanting EU mobility to carry out part of their work in other member states

Requirements

• A hosting agreement (Aufnahmevereinbarung) or equivalent contract with a recognised research institution
• A relevant higher qualification giving access to doctoral programmes (typically)
• Secured financing / salary for the research period
• Health insurance
• Valid passport

What you can do

• Carry out your research project at the host institution
• Also engage in teaching
• Conduct research in other EU states for limited periods without a new permit
• Bring family members, and after the project stay up to 18 months to seek a job

How to apply

Conclude a hosting agreement with the recognised research institution in Germany.

Apply for the national research visa at the German mission abroad (if you require a visa to enter) and attend a biometrics appointment.

After arrival, register your address and apply for the research residence permit at the local foreigners' authority.

• Proof of qualification (e.g. relevant degree/doctorate access)
• Proof of financing or salary for the research period
• Proof of health insurance
• Completed national visa application form
