After you arrive in Germany
Once in Germany you register your address, then apply at the local foreigners' authority to turn your national visa into a residence permit.
Important
A German national (category D) visa lets you enter and start your stay, but it is not your final permission to live in Germany — it is typically issued for a limited period (often up to one year) so you can obtain a residence permit locally. Two steps matter most after arrival: registering where you live, and applying for your residence permit.
These steps are handled by different local offices, so do them promptly and in order, and always before your visa expires.
1. Register your address (Anmeldung)
- Register your German address at the local residents' registration office (Bürgeramt/Einwohnermeldeamt) shortly after moving in — generally within two weeks
- You receive a registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung), which you need for later steps
2. Apply for your residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel)
- Apply at your local foreigners' authority (Ausländerbehörde) before your national visa expires
- Nationals who are allowed to enter visa-free for this purpose apply for the residence permit here rather than getting a visa beforehand
- Bring proof of your purpose of stay, secured livelihood and health insurance, and give biometrics for the electronic card
- The residence permit lets you stay for the specific purpose tied to your route and is the permission you extend in future
