Requirements

  • You must be a national of, or resident in, one of the eligible countries/regions — as of 15 May 2026: Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, United Kingdom and the U.S.A.
  • You must not already be exempt from a short-term visa (visa-exempt nationals cannot use the eVISA)
  • You must be an ordinary passport holder
  • You must be travelling to Japan by international flight or international scheduled passenger ferry
  • The purpose of travel must be tourism for a short-term stay of up to 90 days

How to apply

The whole process is completed online: you submit the application, pay the visa fee and receive the visa in electronic form (eVISA) through the JAPAN eVISA system. There is no need to visit an embassy or consulate or to surrender your passport.

  • Confirm your country/region is on the current eligibility list and that you are not already visa-exempt
  • Create an account and complete the application on the JAPAN eVISA website
  • Upload the required documents and pay the visa fee online
  • Wait for examination — normally about 5 working days
  • Receive the eVISA electronically and present it (typically as a printout or on screen) when you travel
