Allows the spouse and children of certain residents in Japan to live with them as dependants for the duration of the resident's stay.

Who it is for

  • Spouses of foreign nationals holding a qualifying status in Japan
  • Children being supported by a resident of Japan
  • Families joining a principal resident who works or studies in Japan

Requirements

  • A principal resident in Japan holding a qualifying status of residence
  • Proof of the family relationship (spouse or child)
  • A Certificate of Eligibility is normally obtained before the visa

What you can do

  • Live in Japan as the dependant of the principal resident
  • Apply for permission to work part-time (engage in an activity other than that permitted by the status)

How to apply

  • Obtain a Certificate of Eligibility for the dependant via a Regional Immigration Services Bureau
  • Apply for the visa at a Japanese embassy or consulate
  • Enter Japan and receive the Dependent status of residence
