India e-Visa explained
How India's e-Visa scheme works — the official portal, its sub-categories, and when a regular sticker visa is needed instead — with the official Bureau of Immigration guidance.
Important
India's e-Visa is an electronic visa applied for online before travel, covering a range of purposes. This page explains the scheme in plain language, drawing on the official Bureau of Immigration guidance; always use the official portal and confirm the requirements for your nationality.
The official e-Visa portal
e-Visa applications are made through the official Indian e-Visa portal at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Use only the official portal — many look-alike third-party sites are not the government service.
e-Visa sub-categories
The e-Visa scheme includes several sub-categories — e-Tourist, e-Business, e-Medical (with e-Medical Attendant), e-Conference, e-Student and e-Transit visas, among others such as e-Film and e-Miscellaneous. Choose the one that matches your purpose of travel.
When the e-Visa does not apply
Where your purpose or length of stay is not covered by the e-Visa — for example employment or longer study — a regular (sticker) visa is required instead, applied for through an Indian mission. Check the Bureau of Immigration's official list of visas.
